Driving at Work

Driving at Work is a work activity requiring Risk Assessment in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.

In virtually all businesses, driving is the most dangerous work activity. It is estimated that work related driving accounts for approximately 25% of vehicle traffic but people driving on business are around 50% more likely to be involved in a collision than an ordinary driver and around 33% of all collisions involve someone driving for business.

Here are some of the statistics:

25,023 drivers seriously injured in 2011*
36,000 admitted to hospital in 2011 (nearly 100 a day!)
203,950 injuries reported to police*

The Law

Drivers who break the law are accountable for their actions and face the normal criminal sanctions. However, where the driver is on a business journey, there are criminal proceedings than can be brought against the employer and their directors including those under:
